Top websites you should definitely know!

Facebook, Amazon, YouTube and Co. Even though the Internet offers us countless websites, we find ourselves on the same pages over and over again. Most are search engines, social networks or even online shops. But how about some useful new websites that you haven't heard of yet? Yes??! Then it's time to get to know new & cool online helpers!

The most visited websites in Germany

But before we start listing the interesting websites — so please don't scroll down yet 🙂 — we would like to briefly mention a few important facts and figures. According to a publication by Statista, a German online portal for statistics, almost 63 million people in Germany used the Internet in 2019. The proportion of daily Internet users in Germany rose from 76 percent in 2018 to 71 percent in 2019. It also states: “Around 30 million people in Germany use the Internet several times a day, 10.7 million even almost the entire time. ”

The question now is what the most popular websites in Germany are or “were” in 2019. Statista also has an excellent answer to this question. One pretty current study According to (09/2019), search engines, social networks and online shops are the most visited websites in Germany. The top three places are occupied by: Google pages (with 61 million), Facebook (with 49.45 million) and Microsoft pages (with 46.29 million). This is followed by Amazon pages (41.71), Axel Springer SE (36.94), eBay (36.71), Hubert Burda Media (30.46), United Internet sites (27.96), Deutsche Telekom (25.4) and Wikimedia Foundation pages (24.91).

As you can easily see from the study, the most-visited websites (apart from search engines) are not quite the most optimal websites. For this reason, with this post, we would like to take the opportunity to present some useful and inspiring websites and tools. You may already know some websites. But we're sure that there are at least two websites that you don't know and will continue to use and love in the future!

Website #1: Would you like to create fast and professional drawings/diagrams?

Let's start with Website Number One: Draw.io. Draw.io is an open source technology platform for building chart applications and the most used browser-based end-user diagram application in the world. With Draw.io, you can create completely free diagrams, organization charts and mind maps in the browser, as well as circuits, floor plans, website layouts, business models and overviews for software development documentation.

The program also offers several templates from categories such as business, network, technology and layout as well as UML diagrams, Venn diagrams. The browser application has an image database with a large selection of shapes for various purposes. Results can be exported as an image file in PNG, JPEG and SVG formats or as a PDF document and extended with external plug-ins. It is also possible to share the diagram via a URL or embed it on a web page.

Website #2: How about public domain audiobooks?

Our second website recommendation is LibriVox. With more than 24,000 public domain audiobooks, LibriVox is a digital library. The content is available free of charge on the Internet or can be downloaded for later use. There is also an app of the same name with a list of all new recordings, including both popular classics and treasures that are no longer available in print versions.

The catalog includes literature from around the world, including novels, history books, biographies, short stories, poems, and many other fiction and non-fiction books, and new publications are added daily. The books are available in more than 30 languages. The reason LibriVox is free is because hundreds of dedicated volunteers are recording, editing, and distributing the books.

Website #3: Would you like to know if your login details were stolen?

Now we are going to introduce you to a somewhat unusual but reputable website: Have I Been Pwned. On this website, you can easily check whether your personal data has been affected by data breaches. All you have to do is enter your email address and you will receive information in minutes whether it appears in a hack that was recorded in the project's database. There are currently 419 websites with almost 9.3 billion accounts in the database, including Adobe, Yahoo and Snapchat. In addition, the web app has a notification function that automatically notifies you if the email address has been hijacked.

Website No. 4: Do you need a suitable background noise while working?

Are you more productive when you're sitting in a café, in an open-plan office or on the train? Or do you like working from home? Both options have the same drawbacks. Namely the unwanted noises in the background. To avoid exactly this, there is MyNoise. With this online tool, you can choose your favorite soundscape and mask the unnecessary noises. The concept is simple, works very well and does not require expensive and active noise-canceling headphones. Depending on the intention, various topics such as: “I want to sleep”, “I need to focus in a noisy environment”, “I need to calm down”, “My room is too quiet” can be selected. Any background noise can be refined to suit your own taste. You can even create soundscapes that constantly change over time.

In addition to the website version, MyNoise is also available as an app for free download and can be seen on YouTube with a channel of the same name!

Website #5: Would you like to send larger files securely?

We assume that you might be familiar with this website. Nevertheless, for those who are new to this website, we would like to introduce. Which website are you talking about? Of course from WeTransfer. This web app makes it possible to send even large files by email to one or more recipients (i.e. short-term storage on the server for immediate download by recipients) all over the world - free of charge and without any registration, of course. According to the operators, files are deleted from the server one week after they have been uploaded, a file must not exceed 2 gigabytes, and more than three addressees cannot be entered. There is also a paid version: WeTransfer Plus. Up to 50 recipients can be entered here.

Website No. 6: Do you need a short break and would like to do something good?

Our sixth recommendation is freerice.com. A nonprofit, free website and mobile application that allows players to donate rice to families in need by playing a multiple choice quiz game. Freerice is financed by advertising and the rice is distributed to people in need by the World Food Programme (WFP) of the United Nations. According to WFP, 20,000 grains of rice are enough to feed an adult for a day. In the first eleven months since it was put into operation in 2007, more than 43 billion rice grains were donated via the site, i.e. around 2,150,000 daily rations. So a good opportunity to do something good and have fun doing it!

Website #7: Want to read and comment on articles without distractions?

Then we recommend outline.com. With the help of this website, you can easily read and comment on news articles, blog posts and other online texts without advertising and other bells and whistles. All you have to do is enter the URL of the article and click on “CREATE ONLINE”. In just a few seconds, the text of the article appears in a white background with a comment function!

Website #8: Do you need a temporary one-way email?

Then you're at temp-mail.org Just right. This is because this website allows you to receive emails at a temporary address that will self-destruct after a certain period of time. It is also known by names such as: tempmail, 10minutemail, disposable email, fake mail or trash mail. Many forums, WiFi owners, websites, and blogs ask visitors to register before they can view content, post comments, or download anything. Temp Mail — is the most advanced disposable email service that helps you avoid spam and stay safe.

Website No. 9: Would you like to create individual presentations, posters, flyers online?

With the simplified graphic design tool Canva With over 60,000 templates on specific topics such as “food,” “birthday,” or “travel,” you can create custom presentations, invitations, posters, flyers, social media posts, blog posts, maps, charts, and email headers. The web app uses a drag-and-drop format and provides access to photos, vector graphics, and fonts. Canva is used by “non-designers” as well as professionals. It is also possible to upload your own content. You can share the result with your friends as an image file or PDF on your computer or via a link.

However, there is one requirement: To use it, you must log in with an email address or a Facebook or Google account.

Website No. 10: Would you like to listen to radio from all over the world?

Our penultimate website recommendation is RADIO.GARDEN. This website connects you to thousands of live radio stations worldwide. By turning the globe, you can choose which radio program you want to listen to. In true style as with an FM radio, there is a noise between the stations. In addition to the “Live” radios, the “History”, “Jingles” and “Stories” tabs contain further interesting information.
